John Needham of Old Car Gearboxes will be the guest speaker at the club’s virtual meeting on Friday 4 December.
John grew up in Brisbane and at the age of 12 he learned to drive a Chevrolet Blitz truck. That’s where his love of mechanics and cars started.
John trained as a PMG telephone technician but was pensioned off for health reasons after 20 years and started his business in East Malvern.
His first gearbox which was in a Ford 10/10 bread van. Working on many other people’s gearboxes he has become an expert in stripping, repairing and putting back together the jigsaw puzzles that are old gearboxes.
His workshop has a list of the gearboxes awaiting repair, including Bentley, Morgan, Maserati, E-Type Jag and Lancia Lambda. But he has an affection for Peugeots.
“Peugeot people are more sophisticated,” he says.
